The National Cancer Screening Service CervicalCheck programme a winner in the Irish Healthcare Awards

2 November 2012

The National Cancer Screening Service (NCSS) won this year’s Irish Healthcare Award in the Best Education Project – General practice and pharmacy category. The NCSS was advised that the overall volume of entries this year was enormous and entrants ranged from a wide spectrum of health professionals representing the large national teaching hospitals and national universities.

Ms Majella Byrne, Acting Director, NCSS commented: “We are pleased with the award. It reflects not only the progress of the programme over recent years, also our team work and the contribution of the health professionals in delivering and promoting the programme to women nationwide.”

The submission ‘CervicalCheck Educational Programme’ outlines the approach used by the NCSS to increasing awareness and coverage of the programme through providing training and education sessions to a wide variety of health professionals. The approach also incorporates communications and a clear strategy to ensure optimum participation in the CervicalCheck programme.

The training and education programmes aim to:

  • achieve best practice standards
  • provide core knowledge on cervical cancer screening
  • raise awareness of the programme to a variety of health professionals
  • encourage informed decision making among women about participating in CervicalCheck

The training programmes are provided to a broad range of health professionals nationally including, GPs, pharmacists, occupational health nurses, practice nurses, community nurses, health promotion professionals, public health nurses, primary care teams, health promotion and public health students.

The National Cancer Screening Service is part of the Health Service Executive National Cancer Control Programme.
