NCSS CONGRATULATES IRISH FAMILY PLANNING ASSOCIATION ON PEARL OF WISDOM AWARD

The National Cancer Screening Service (NCSS) today congratulates the Irish Family Planning Association (IFPA) on receiving a Pearl of Wisdom Award from the European Cervical Cancer Association for its commitment to raising awareness about cervical cancer prevention.

The IFPA partnered with CervicalCheck – The National Cervical Screening Programme to promote European Cervical Cancer Prevention Week (24-30 January) in Ireland. The Pearl of Wisdom is the international emblem of cervical cancer prevention.

Twenty thousand pins were distributed together with information about CervicalCheck. The purpose of the campaign was to encourage discussion about cervical cancer and to remind women to make an appointment for a free smear test when they receive their letter of invitation from CervicalCheck.

CervicalCheck provides free smear tests to women aged 25 to 60. The aim of cervical screening is to detect and treat changes on the cells of the cervix before they become cancerous. A smear test only takes minutes and the earlier cell changes are found the easier they are to treat.
